Dog Obedience Training

One of Dog Training Elite’s most popular training services is focused on obedience, which includes in-home sessions and group classes. Obedience is essential for dogs to become confident, well-behaved, and loyal pets.

A well-trained dog is better equipped to handle new environments, meet new people, and engage with other pets. By teaching them boundaries and commands, you create a safe, structured environment where they can shine as loyal and loving companions.

Starting training early for puppies sets the foundation for lifelong good behavior. It’s never too late to start—older dogs can also benefit from our proven dog obedience training techniques.

Our services are high quality and thorough; we work hard to ensure your dogs are properly trained and ready to safely explore the world around them.

Could not be happier with Dog Training Elite in Albuquerque. Our dog Xochi was very reactive which made it difficult for her to enjoy many activities with us including walking in public around other dogs, having friends over to our house. Kayla C came to work with us and Xochi, helping us teach Xochi commands but also teaching us how to respond to Xochi's reactivity. After even the first session Xochi showed improvement. Finally the ultimate test was when Kayla C brought her own dog Axl into our home, and though Xochi wasn't thrilled, she allowed him to exist in our home, even sit in HER chair! The group sessions are very helpful as well, each time Xochi goes, she shows improvement and learns that other dogs are not always so scary! Now Xochi's quality of life has greatly improved because she can be at ease around new people and dogs, and she now has pack leaders who are learning how to lead her. DTE NM, Kayla C and Lacy could not have done a better job.

We chose to enroll our rescue pup in the training camp with the two follow up at home training sessions. All of the trainers are very knowledgeable, patient, and exceptional at what they do. We had so much success with our girl. The expense was worth it to us, we viewed it as an investment in her and our family. Would highly recommend!

They were knowledgeable, positive and so patient. As a three dog owner, Dog Training Elite has been the best trainer I have ever worked with, and hands down would recommend them without hesitation. Thank you, Christy!

With all of the Dachshunds that we have had over the years, we have never enrolled one in dog training. I have to say that we are really impressed by Dog Training Elite! Sydney was our primary trainer, we had Jared out once as well. Sydney was very professional and up beat with her training methods. She explained everything as she went along and did a great job of coaching our puppy, as well as us - we needed training on what to do as well. At the end of each session, Sydney would make sure to remind us that we could reach out to them by phone or email if we had any needs for our continued training. I would highly recommend Dog Training Elite.

Dog Training Elite has been truly incredible. A few months ago, we adopted Biscuit, a really good dog with a great temperament. Both my son and I are on the autism spectrum, and having Biscuit at home has been a huge blessing, especially for my 7 year old. Our psychologist even recommended having a dog for the positive impact it could bring. At the same time, we were dealing with real challenges. Biscuit would chase squirrels, pull on the leash, and if he got loose, catching him was almost impossible. This made it difficult and sometimes unsafe for my son to walk him. After connecting with David, Cindy, and Kyle, at Dog Training Elite team, everything started to change. In just a few sessions, the results have been amazing. Biscuit can stay in place even in open areas, walk calmly without pulling, ignore distractions, and respond when my son calls him. Seeing that level of connection has been incredibly meaningful for us. What they have achieved in just a few weeks has been truly life changing. On top of that, their warmth and genuine care make the whole experience even better. Highly recommended. Note: I couldn’t upload videos no matter how hard I tried, so I’m sharing these photos, even though they don’t do justice to what my son and I experienced.

Best dog trainer in Richmond!! I had an outstanding experience with Dog Training Elite, and I can’t recommend them enough. From the very beginning, Paul was knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping both me and my dog succeed. What really stood out was how personalized the training was. Paul took the time to understand my dog’s behavior and tailored each session to address specific challenges while also building on strengths. The progress we saw in just a short time was incredible. Better obedience, improved focus, and a much calmer overall demeanor. Beyond the results, Paul made the entire process enjoyable and easy to follow. He explained everything clearly, gave practical tips we could apply daily, and was always encouraging. It never felt overwhelming, just effective. If you’re looking for professional dog training with someone who truly cares, Dog Training Elite is the way to go!!

Taylor is incredible. From the very first session, it was clear how knowledgeable and skilled he is. He is always kind, patient, and takes the time to listen to any questions or concerns. I adopted my dog Simba at 5 years old, and while I don’t know everything he’s been through, his fear and anxiety showed up as aggression toward others. Through working with Taylor, I’ve learned how to better understand Simba, manage his behavior with commands, and keep both him and others safe. I no longer feel anxious passing strangers on walks or having new people in my apartment. This progress takes time and consistency, but Taylor has done an amazing job teaching both of us. Dog training is an investment of both time and money, but this experience has been so worth it. I’m so grateful and would HIGHLY recommend Taylor to anyone looking for a trainer.

Elijah did a great job of explaining the various packages to me and answering all my questions. You could tell he’s a real dog person. He even brought his own dog which has been trained using CDT’s methods to show me how my dog will be trained!

Matt has been fantastic! We are learning so much and seeing huge results with our dog. Matt has been teaching us to focus on our dog’s needs and to manage our expectations. Our dog is very agressive towards other dogs and today Matt brought his dog out to use as a distraction and to teach us how to handle our dog in real situations with another dog nearby. The progress is unbelievable. Highly recommend!

Why Training is Essential for Obedience

Obedience training is an essential investment for dog owners, especially those who have never owned a dog before. Training is a fundamental step to rearing an intelligent and well-behaved dog. Without even basic obedience training, a dog will be unable to learn more advanced skills, safely leave the house, or go off-leash.

Benefits of obedience training:

  • Safety: Obedient dogs are less likely to engage in dangerous behavior, such as fighting, biting, aggressive barking, or running away. As they learn to trust and listen to their owner, they will respond to commands and stay calm in threatening situations.
  • Socialization: Puppies must be socialized with other dogs to know how to positively interact with other animals and people. Without socialization, they begin to look at animals and people as threats, which leads to unsafe behaviors.
  • Behavior: Nondangerous but unwanted behaviors such as barking, pulling, jumping, and begging can all be minimized with proper obedience training.
  • Confidence and stability: When properly trained, dogs will become more confident, and comfortable in all different environments. Dogs will be more trustful while interacting with new environments and take away the stress of bringing them out with you.

Effective Training Through Positive Reinforcement and Classical Conditioning

Our Obedience Training Methods

The goal of obedience training is in the name–training a dog to obey commands reliably. Obedience training for dogs can be lengthy and requires repetition, consistency, and positive reinforcement to achieve lasting results.

This training involves teaching a puppy or dog basic commands like sit, come, heel, or down. Dog Training Elite trainers also use obedience training to teach commands more unique to your situation.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Desired behaviors can be encouraged with positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Rewards satisfy your dog's natural desire to please and create a strong bond between dog and owner.
  • Customized Approach: We recognize that every dog is different, from breed to temperament, and because of that, they may be predisposed to certain behaviors. After meeting your dog, we will customize a training plan to meet their unique needs.
  • Professional Trainers: Dog Training Elite has highly experienced trainers who prioritize building trust between dog and owner. With years of experience to draw on, they successfully use communication and patience to get the behavioral results you want for your dog.
  • Long-Term Results: Our training methods are designed to produce lasting behavioral changes in dogs of all breeds and ages. Consistency and repetition are necessary for proper obedience training, but when you commit to training, you will be impressed with the results.

Common Questions About Obedience Training

Still have questions about obedience training? We’ve got you covered! Below are some frequently asked questions that might help clarify any remaining concerns you have. At Dog Training Elite, we're here to ensure you and your dog have the best training experience possible.

The earlier, the better. Puppies are welcome! That being said, old dogs truly can learn new tricks - there is no reason an older dog can’t learn basic commands.
Besides basic commands, obedience training can address issues such as chewing, whining or barking, jumping to greet others, and begging for food.
No. Pain or punishment is never used in any form during training programs. The electronic collars we use produces a gentle “tug” to get a dog's attention. It is not a shock collar and does not harm or alarm a pet.
In-home training is necessary because it allows trainers to focus on the particular issues of individual dogs (like terrorizing a pet cat or chasing the mailman). During in-home training sessions trainers also work side by side with owners and any other family members so the dog understands who is in control.
